Marker Girl: Rug Design Inspiration
Karen Davis discovered her love of creativity and interior design while growing up in New Orleans. More importantly, she discovered that a true sense of “home” comes from the family that lives within it.
Shortly after marrying her husband, they were transferred to Paris, France. It was there that she seized the opportunity to study interior design, and it was there that she discovered her true creative passion for interior design.

Rug Design Inspiration from Karen Davis
She and her family started their own interior design business after moving back to Houston, dreaming of white sofas made of velvet and silk drapery hanging on the wall in their new home. However, when her daughter was a toddler, she had a “mommy feeling” that something was wrong because it was unusually quiet. She walked into her living room to find her daughter doing her own decorating – drawing with a black Sharpie on herself and the furniture, and that was it.
Her daughter’s “art” marker was a turning point. She then reinvented her business to reflect the Marker Girl way of life. It sparked an interest in locating family-friendly furnishings that can withstand real-life use.

A Collected Home

A natural-looking sofa with chairs on either side and a coffee table. This is a great example of rug design inspiration. Karen chose her color palette by referencing the rug, sculpture/pottery, and garden colors. She softens with soft blues, tans, greys, and persimmon red punches.

The presence of blue tones is noticeable in this room. The table lamp complements the sofa and ottoman. To enhance the calming blues, a neutral color was chosen for the rug.
Made For Mom

This is a living room makeover designed for a mom of 6. It is very family-friendly and is intended for Mom’s enjoyment. The rug design inspiration here is a custom-bound carpet in blue and grey that is stain resistant and was chosen to withstand the dog and children.

They also chose a blue rug with a geometric pattern for the mother’s office. This is a fantastic idea for rug design inspiration that brings a room to life.
Inspired by the look
Farmhouse Remix

This space is grounded by a traditional rug that brings all of the colors in the room together.

A light neutral rug was chosen for this master bedroom to complement the blue tones of the pillows and ottoman.
Modern Family Remodel

Because window treatments were not desired, a striped rug was used to add a pattern.

The den is a small, oddly shaped room. This room is for the kids, so dad and mom can keep an eye on them while they cook. Smaller swivel chairs have been added to watch TV when desired, as well as a small sofa to accommodate more guests. Because it is a small space, the design also includes a nested table set that can be tucked away. The rug design inspiration chosen for this room was a rug that matches the colors of both sofas and pillows.
Small Spaces Big Style

This house had a small garage that was partially closed in for a spare room that was being used to store odds and ends. But the owners wanted a nicer space where a guest could sleep but the kids could play in as well. So they placed a sleeper sofa and small built-in only so the kids had room to play in the space. The rug design inspiration in this room is this colorful rug that livens up the room and matches the pillows.

Because she had toddlers, it was suggested that the furniture had rounded corners so the kids could play. This rug in a light color and pattern matches perfectly the overall picture.
