Andre Fu, a Hong Kong-based interior designer, was named Interior Designer of the Year by Elle Decoration China in 2019 and Maison & Objet Asia’s Designer of the Year in 2016. Asia’s most sought-after interior architect, André Fu, is renowned for creating unique, enthralling spaces.
1. St. Regis
In a city known for its upscale accommodations, the furnishings of the St. Regis Hong Kong won praise from the press. The 27-story tower dominates the Wan Chai waterfront in Hong Kong, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods and where trams still run. It is a sparkling, visual presence.
Wan Chai is home to pawn shops, the former police station, and the Bauhaus-style market, which Fu deftly incorporates into his design. This creates a rich and evocative experience by taking the visitor on an immersive, layered visual journey where personal memories are woven with the city’s history.
2. Artus | K11
The 287 houses for both short- and long-term stays are the work of Fu. Fu says, “For me, it was about establishing a familiar sense of comfort, of creature comforts, and solitude while at the same time feeling part of a community that has a similar interest in a cultural lifestyle.”
The skilful blending of serene neutrals, earthy, mineral accents, and rich textures is what this translates to. Imagine walls covered in Persian and ethnic-inspired textiles, sleek lacquer, retro-modernist furnishings with delicate oriental decorative elements, and Fu’s hand-selected, quirky decorative objects that blend in masterful, layered tone combinations.
3. Kerry Hotel
The Kerry Hotel in Hong Kong is the first hotel to be constructed on the Kowloon waterfront in 20 years and the newest and most fashionable addition to the city’s renowned Victoria Harbour. As an “urban resort,” this sixteen-story hotel aims to inspire a sense of casual luxury in one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
Fu has worked to integrate the exterior landscape with the fluid architecture of the interior to produce a hotel that will meet the needs of both business and pleasure travellers.
4. The Upper House
A sophisticated and contemporary “Asian-influenced” home is created by combining natural materials, unique sculptural installations, and well-sized areas. “I purposefully evoked a sense of tranquillity throughout the architecture and environment of the hotel with a goal to create a modest intimate hotel reminiscent of a private apartment,” explains Andre Fu.
The end product is a sophisticated modern-oriental home with all the amenities of a grand home, created with consideration for balanced geometry and symmetry. Although the plan uses a restrained color scheme and lacquered panels and bamboo to evoke an oriental sensibility, it yet has a cosmopolitan feel when taken as a whole.
