Meet Joana Vasconcelos
Joana Vasconcelos, born in 1971, is a visual artist best known for her monumental sculptures, but her 25-year career also includes drawing and film. She modernises the arts and crafts concept for the twenty-first century, incorporating everyday objects with irony and humour, bridging the domestic and public spheres while questioning the status of women, consumerism, society, and collective identity.

Joana Vasconcelos Internationalisation
International acclaim came at the first Venice Biennale ever curated by women with The Bride in 2005, followed by Trafaria Praia, the first floating pavilion in the biennale representing Portugal in 2013. Her 2012 exhibition was the most visited in France in 50 years, with 1.6 million visitors, as the youngest artist and the only woman ever at the Palace of Versailles. Roche Bobois x Joana Vasconcelos – BOMBOM Collection
To commemorate Roche Bobois’ 60th anniversary, the brand has decided to continue the dialogue with Joana Vasconcelos by commissioning her to design a line of seating and decorative accessories as the year’s flagship collection.
She took on the challenge of designing pieces intended to interact with a wider audience while maintaining the perspective of an artist rather than a designer. She offers her vision of the world adapted to the organisation of living spaces by transposing her themes and questions to everyday objects.
As a result, a collection of multifunctional pieces that are playful, alluring, and optimistic has been created.
THE SOFAS
A collection of sofas with fluid, organic, and generous shapes that can be composed and combined as desired. Joana Vasconcelos’ optimism and creativity are reflected in the colours: direct, fresh, tart, and deep shades are united but outlined by black stripes. The backs are all mobile and independent, allowing each sofa to take on its own shape. These pieces allow you to design your own comfort, whether sitting or lying down.
THE CUSHIONS
Cushions in the collection feature patterns from the artist’s original designs, printed and embroidered on white or black backgrounds. It comes in three different sizes and six different designs. This collection reflects Joana Vasconcelos’ work’s fantasy and chromatic exuberance.
THE RUGS
The collection is completed by four rug designs. Joana Vasconcelos’ original drawings were reproduced in flamboyant hues by priting process in three of them: two rectangular designs with a black or light background, and a circular design.
The fourth design is tufted and embodies certain codes of the artist’s artworks: organic, colourful, and alluring shapes form an original form, and their relief is brought to life by varying thickness contrasting against the black background.
