In 1956, Lou Solomon hired John Cordwell, and they created the Carl Sandburg Village, which triumphed in a citywide competition in 1957. The project became a national model for urban regeneration because it included amenities including townhomes encircling above- and below-ground structured parking and landscaped plazas. John Buenz joined the company as John Cordwell’s third partner in 1963. Together, the three men laid the groundwork for a strong high-rise residential profession that is still going strong today.
