Rug Pile height refers to the density of fibres – flat, which has a short pile, and shaggy, the long pile. This height measures the thickness of the rug, measuring from the surface to the backing of the rug – it can have three sizes: low, medium and high.

The pile height affects how a rug feels under our hands and feet, affecting also how easy, or difficult, it makes take to clean it. The appropriate thickness of a rug depends on the placement of said rug. On this article, we will explore all these important details!

Thickness, why it is important?

The appropriate thickness of a rug depends on the placement of said item if you are on the look-out for a rug to place in an area that has a lot of foot ‘traffic’, a high-density rug is best for these areas. And why? Because a high-density rug is better at withstanding continuous footfall and still remain in good shape, whilst also providing greater comfort underfoot.

However, if you are searching for a rug to place under furniture, such as a table or a sofa, a low pile rug will provide a sturdier and flattened surface. A low pile rug is easier to take care and also tends to last longer.

Types of Pile, why it matters?

There are two different types of piles: cut and loop. The most common type is the cut-pile, which creates a surface that is dense and soft to walk on. These type of rugs are best if we are looking for comfort and walking barefoot.

Loop pile can be seen in rugs that are woven or tufted and results in a rug that is durable and suitable for areas of high traffic. Loop pile rugs are easier to clean, however, should be avoided around pets, for their claws will get caught in the loops.

High pile rugs feature longer fibres and loops and are often called shag rugs. Because of their height, high pile rugs allow for more give and tend to look and feel softer than mid and low pile rugs – but they also tend to be a bit more difficult to vacuum. To keep a high pile rug in new condition for as long as possible, refrain from placing it in areas that see high foot traffic.

If you want the luxurious look of a high pile rug and the tight feel of a low pile rug, consider splitting the difference with a mid pile rug. As its name suggests, a mid pile rug is a rug with a pile height in between high and low. One of the most popular rug options on the market, a mid pile rug carries just enough height to deliver a shag appearance – and just enough density to make it easy to clean.

How to Style It: Mid pile rugs are versatile, in both use and style, and you can’t go wrong with location, pattern or colour. However, to make a mid pile rug truly shine, consider cosy layers; placing a small mid pile rug over a larger low pile rug offers unexpected flair – in the comfiest way possible.

Because they tend to feel softer and make for easier vacuuming, low pile rugs are best for kids rooms – or any room in a household with children, for that matter. Plus, because the fibres are tighter and lower to the ground, there’s almost no risk of tripping over any loose ends.

How to Style It: The fibres of a low pile rug are tight and low to the ground and serve by function more than aesthetic, so choose a low pile rug in a fun or unique pattern to prevent it from blending in with the rest of the flooring.
