EMKO<\/em><\/span><\/strong> is a Lithuaning design brand that has worked with a local textile factor to repurpose its rainbow array of leftovers yarns into a spotted rug, which aims to bring chaotic energy into modern interiors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set against a plain brown or blue base, the linen offcuts are used to form blobs of different colours and pile heights, with some merging into the backdrop while others playfully protrude. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Called\u00a0Chaos<\/em><\/strong>, the rug is hand-tufted in the same family-run textile factory, in the town of Panev\u0117\u017eys, where the offcuts are generated in the first place. The rug features multicoloured linen offcuts embedded into a caramel brown base. The colourful blobs have different pile weights to add texture to the rug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EMKO <\/strong>developed a way to turn the practical limitations of the offcuts, which are available in small quantities of many different colours rather than a large amount of any one colour, into a playful visual language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This highlights rather than downplays the fact that the rug is made using post-industrial waste materials and aims to start conversations about the need for a more responsible, circular use of resources. The Chaos <\/em><\/strong>rug is also available in navy blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although all Chaos<\/em><\/strong> rugs are made in the same way, the outcome is slightly different each time, due to the varying availability of the different offcuts. The confetti-like pattern brings some chaos into sterile modern interiors while allowing\u00a0the weaver a degree of improvisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the project, EMKO <\/strong>hopes to crank up small-scale, local linen production as well as the cultivation of flax \u2013 the plant from which linen is derived. All rugs are hand-tufted in Lithuania. The Chaos Rug<\/em><\/span><\/strong> is\u00a0shortlisted for this year\u2019s Dezeen Award\u00a0in the\u00a0homeware design category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
